1.Thinkin’ About You (4:39) – Emel

Emel is a female singing sensation from Switzerland. At the age of 17 she was
hired by Euro-dance king DJ Bobo to sing the No.1 hits “Somebody Dance
with Me”, and “Keep on Dancing” with him. After touring extensively
as a background singer she embarked on a solo career releasing her first album,
“Can We Talk,” in 1996. Her release of, “Free”, for
BMG (Germany) in 1999 featured the oriental inspired, “Thinking About
You”. Emel, which in Arabic means, “wish for the future”, is
currently working on her third release.

2. Let It Go (4:08) – Avilla Brothers (featuring Shelea)

We have gone to great lengths to get this song from the brother duo on this
compilation. After several unsuccessful attempts Bobby Ross Avila agreed for
which I’m so thankful because this is the kind of quality which deserves more
exposure. It comes from an album from which more of their production expertise
can be heard.

3. So EZ (3:49) – Dana Devine

Dana is actually a gospel artist from Chicago. Her current release titled,
“A Nu Language”, was executively produced and independently released
in 2004 by Dana Divine herself. The track chosen for this compilation happens
to be one of Northwest DJ Richard Searlings’ favourites of 2004.

4. Brother (4:40) – Ian Martin (featuring Gavin Christopher)

Ian, a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, is no stranger to the UK soul
scene. His debut album, titled “One”, was released in 2000. “One”,
was actually a set of songs that were then originally student demos, and the
songs were polished enough to present in full, motivating Ian to peruse recording
further. The track, “Brother”, is selected from his sophomore album
titled, “The Way”, just out on Expansion Records featuring the Los
Angeles based Gavin Christopher on vocals. Gavin is no stranger in the industry
either being well remembered for the hit, “One Step Closer to You”.
He was part of Chaka Khan’s band Lyfe, and he penned Rufus’ biggest hit to date,
“Once You Get Started”. He also wrote and performed, “Stars
In Your Eyes”, for Herbie Hancock. Ian pulls out the best of Gavin for
his track, “Brother”.

5. Never Knew Love Like This (4:45) – Funky Boudoir

Belgium, the land of chocolates and beer, moreover well known for the Manneke
Pis spawns this surprising soul-jazz-funk-blues influenced collective! Funky
Boudoir, consists of Dani Caen, Jan Verheyen, Oliver Bodson, and Tony Gyselinck
among others, who’ve played with artists such as jazz saxophonist Candy Dulfer.
“Never Knew Love Like This”, a duet with Dani and T. C. Caen on
lead vocals is a true Flyte Time classic, taken from their self-titled debut
for Red Bullet is featured as their fluid, loungey accomplishment selected for
this compilation.

6. Sistuh’s Skaing Up (4:06) – Brenda Vaughn

Oakland, California is where Brenda began her career. Her voice is an infusion
of soul, blended with R&B and Gospel, making her one of the most sought
after performers. Bountiful with talent, she’s done a host of things from songwriting
to commercials, and television works, on up to coordinating shows for other
major artists. She formed a group called Gospel Voices with whom she currently
performs with today. She now resides in Tokyo, Japan. “Sista’s Shaking
Up”, is an enchanting preview of Brenda’s abilities. In 2006 she’ll release
her long-awaited solo debut.

7. When You Need Me (4:45) – Dessy Di Lauro & Ric’key Pageot

Dessy Di Lauro, Brazilian-Italo-Cuban singer-songwriter is de facto, Montreal
born. Ric’key Page produced their six-track EP-CD from which, “When You
Need Me”, is taken. Their new project titled, “In-Depth Study of
A Woman’s Soul”, is soon to be released in the near future and will feature
more of their unique pan-ethnic influenced musical style.

8. Dangerous Summer Night (4:58) – Maysa Leak

Maysa is one of the most prolific, ubiquitous female voices on the soul scene
from coast to coast to coast. Her velvety voice has been in demand with countless
artists ranging from Stevie Wonder to Incognito to Urban Species and Opaz, with
whom she lended her voice to for the song, “What About Our Love”,
which remains a personal favourite of many the world over. “Dangerous
Summer Night”, a virtually unrevealed find recorded in 2003 for the Japanese
market, finally brings forth to a wider audience her jazzy, soulful, stimulating
style.

9. How Far Can We Go (5:11) – Kokoh

What a surprise from a classically trained ballerina! Kokoh is a Texan native
that began her training at the Booker T. Washington School for the Performing
and Visual Arts, along with classmates Erykah Badu, Roy Hargrove, and Norah
Jones. She headlined her own jazz band from the tender age of 19 and has performed
with such artists as Keith Sweat, The Gap Band, and the late great Phyllis Hyman.
Her performance caught the eye of RCA which led to her signing with the label
and working on a project, then produced by Leon Ware, Gerald Albright, and Michael
J. Powell. This Lone Star lady delivers the sensuous, “How Far Can We
Go” (previously unreleased), exclusive to this compilation only, which
is just one facet of this lady’s skill and artistry. Kokoh is gearing up to
soon release her solo debut.

10. Slow Jam Of The Year (3:52) – Innervoices

From Southern California comes the group Innervoices, a trio comprised of Toby,

Lew, and Angelo. The three are lead vocalists in their own right and have been
collaborating and performing together since 1995. In 1999 they recorded their
first single which led to their debut LP, “Heart, Mind, and Soul”.
The Stevie Wonder inspired, “Slow Jam of The Year”, is taken from
the trio’s sophomore LP which I discovered by coincidence, with absolutely no
regret.

11. Do For You (5:11) – Heavy

Heavy is the dynamic duo of Nicky Guiland and Casey Benjamin, who’ve been in
alliance since high school. Casey Benjamin is of Grenadian-Panamanian heritage,
and Nicky Guiland is of Trinidadian-Jamaican heritage – imagine their sound
as a backdrop to present-day new urban life! Both are now based in Jamaica,
Queens, New York. “Do For You”, features Teddy Crockett (brother
of Alison Crockett) on guitar and background vocals. The song is taken from
their 5-song 2003 EP, and gives solid promise of more to come.

12. That Place In My Heart (4:45) – Dee Dee Wilde

Sunny Miami Florida is the setting. Vincent Broomfield is the producer. “That
Place in My Heart”, is the song featuring the awe-inspiring Dee Dee Wilde,
sister to recording artists Broomfield and Eugene Wilde. Dee Dee has produced
several independent albums since her solo debut for 4th & Broadway/Island
in 1989. Remember the song, “Lap of Luxury?” Saxophonist-keyboard
player Vincent Broomfield is no stranger to the U.K. soul scene either. Under
the name, ‘Audio’, he recorded an album in 1991 for the U.K. based Rare Groove
Records titled, “Romantic”. Dee Dee, Vincent, as well as the rest
of the Broomfield and Wilde clan will ALL have new albums coming in 2006.

13. No Matter What The Weather May Be (4:21) – Denise Tichenor

Denise Tichenor returns to Expansion with yet another powerful message indeed,
this time around with the reverent ballad, “No Matter What The Weather
May Be”, another exclusive to this compilation. One of eight children
born to a church pastor, Denise showed an early talent in music. She never foresaw
a career as a singer full-time during her years growing up in Indianapolis.
In the years since Denise began, she has been honoured with the 1990 Gospel
Excellence Award and the 1994 Stellar Award Nomination for Contemporary Female
Vocalist of the Year. She is also a lead singer for BET’s Bobby Jones Gospel
Show. Denise’s brand-new recording “Discovering Denise Tichenor,”
will be available soon.

14. Anytime, Any Place (6:02) – Ané

The Las Vegas based Ané (pronounced Ah-nay) released the 1996 LP, “Once
Upon A Time”, under the name of Shirley Marshall. Both the artist’s name
and title has since been re-packaged and released under her own label Sama Records,
the title now being, “My Story – Volume 1”. Produced and arranged
by Greg Radford who’s known for his production work with Curtis Hairston. “Anytime,
Anyplace” is her answer to Janet Jackson’s hit record. An honour to this
compilation and a difficult re-make, literally, this cheerful Brazilian-influenced
song comes ahead of her brand-new release, “My Story – Volume 2”.

15. Can’t Go Back (Remix) (4:23) – Peggi Blu

We conclude with an excellent remix of Peggi Blu’s, “Can’t Go Back”,
another exclusive to Soul Exposed. “Can’t Go Back”, was specially
recorded, remixed, and re-worked to perfection for this compilation. The original
version of this song can be found on her latest CD, “Livin’ On Love”.
This Star Search, $100,000.00 prize, 1986 Grand Champion Female Vocalist winner,
and former MCA and Capitol recording artist has worked with just about any possible
artist you can imagine. Expansion is no exception. She has established herself
as one of New York’s top background singers, backing up for such stars as Stevie
Wonder, Irene Cara, The Crusaders, Smokey Robinson, Bob Dylan, and the late
great Luther Vandross, among many others. Peggi is preparing to record her follow-up
CD which will be under the guidance of musical maestro Ted Perlman.
