• Cissy Houston (born Emily Drinkard) has had a long and varied career as a background vocalist, session singer and solo artist but is probably best known for being the mother of the massively successful R&B star Whitney Houston, and the aunt of both Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick. Houston began her career with the family gospel group The Drinkards before joining forces with The Group in the early 60’s. The Group, which included some time members Doris Troy and Dee Dee Warwick, sang background vocals on a number of soul, pop and rock releases, many of which were on Atlantic Records. Atlantics Jerry Wexler signed the group in their own right where they recorded some great gospel-soul in the late 60’s under the name The Sweet Inspirations.

• During her time with The Sweet Inspirations Houston sang back-up vocals for Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Lou Rawls, The Drifters, Dusty Springfield, Van Morrison (Brown Eyed Girl), The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Elvis Presley (the ’69 Vegas comeback) and her niece Dionne Warwick. Having gone solo in 1969 Houston recorded the original version of “Midnight Train To Georgia” (later a #1 single for Gladys Knight and The Pips) on her only album for Janus Records.

• In 1978 Houston released THINK IT OVER, her second LP on Private Stock Records under the guidance of arranger/producer Michael Zager. This album introduced Houston to the Disco world with the title track and lead single “Think It Over” reaching a respectable #32 on the Billboard R&B charts and #5 on the Disco charts. “Think It Over” is bona-fide dance floor dynamite with its solid beat and shuffling percussive elements that propel the track forward, the beautiful marriage of piano and strings augmented with arresting, uplifting horn refrains, married to Houston’s incredible, gospel infused, soulful and impassioned vocal. The second single “Warning – Danger” is in much the same vain, again the piano, string and horn interplay is oh so satisfying. Other strong tracks are the groover “Somebody Should Have Told Me,” and the bold ballad “After You” which showcases Houston’s vocal dexterity.
