MARLENA SHAW is one of America’s most diversely talented female vocalists from the last 50 years. With a career spanning over 5 decades, her music has been sampled and covered by countless artists of all genres and has touched the lives of people all over the globe.
MARLENA SHAW started her career singing in jazz clubs after her uncle introduced her to music through his record collection of jazz greats. In 1966 she signed to the legendary Chicago- based Soul label, Chess records and released her first two albums on their subsidiary label Cadet Records while simultaneously fronting the incredible Count Basie Band.

In 1978 MARLENA SHAW released her second album on Columbia Records, ACTING UP, the follow up to Sweet Beginnings. ACTING UP once again featured the production genius of the legendary Bert De Coteaux with musical contributions from Abraham Laboriel whose talent made him one of the most in demand bass players of recent years, travelling and working with artists such as Lionel Ritchie, Quincy Jones and Chaka Khan to name a few and on drums, ex-Motown session drummer, Quentin Dennard, all of which helped the album reach an impressive #60 on the Cash Box R&B Charts and #171 on the Billboard 200.

BBR is proud to present this newly re-mastered and lovingly re-packed edition of Marlena Shaw’s, ACTING UP, complete with extensive liner notes featuring an interview with Marlena Shaw especially for this release and 2 bonus tracks including the original soundtrack version of the theme from ‘Looking for Mr. Goodbar (Don’t Ask To Stay Until Tomorrow)’.
